How to Read ePub Books on your Kindle

I am still playing with my Kindle Fire (review will be coming sometime soon in the future) which is pretty cool. Of course, it doesn’t do everything I want it to do (will be in the review). So, I am always looking for new ways to expand its capabilities. Which is where this article comes in. It explains how to get books in the ePUB format onto your Kindle. Which by the way works. I tried it myself. It also works for the Mac which is great since I don’t want to have a PC if I can help it.

How to Read EPub Books on your Kindle

Published by technicalguy on June 6th, 2011 – in Amazon Kindle, eBooks, How to, Small Business Technology

Got a new Kindle for Christmas? Here’s how to convert your collection of books in the EPub format, maybe from Google Books,, AbeBooks, or another online collection, so that you can read those EPub files on your Kindle.
They will appear on your book menu and can be read just like any other Kindle ebook.

Yes, you can read an ePub book on your Amazon Kindle, but you must convert it first (see below). The Kindle definitely has the clearest screen and is currently the closest to actually reading a book. If you haven’t already got one, it’s worth getting a Kindle and converting the EPUB book files.

How to read EPub books on your Kindle

Can the Kindle read EPubs? Well, technically no, you have to convert the EPub file to a format that Kindle does recognize (MOBI) first. There’s probably a few ways to do it, but here’s what I’ve found to be the most simple way.

To Start – Download Calibre

ePub book management software

Calibre is an ebook management software program. Install it on your computer where you want to connect your Kindle. Calibre works with Windows, Mac, and Linux. I ran in on Windows 7 without any problems. It will automatically recognize your Kindle when you plug it in and will handle the necessary conversion when you add a EPub to your Kindle.
[Calibre also converts PDFs, find out how at: How to read PDF’s on your Kindle]

Installing Calibre is as simple as downloading it and running the setup program, accepting the license, and then clicking install.

The last setup screen, shown below, offers you the option to run Calibre right away. Leave it checked and Calibre will start up.

There is no real need to configure anything further. Click Add Books to add your EPub books to the Calibre management system. Browse to the folder where the books are located and select the books you want, then add them.

Now connect your Kindle device. Once it is recognized you will see a new icon at the top of Calibre called Send to Device. Click to highlight the EPub books you wish to send to your Kindle and click this button.

You will be prompted to Auto-convert the file(s), just click Yes.

Convert your epub files for Kindle

You will notice in the bottom-right corner of Calibre it will tell you the status of the jobs being performed. When the number is back to zero you can disconnect your Kindle.

You’re done!

It really is that easy and now you can read EPub books on your Kindle. These books will be backed up as the Kindle is backed up.

Search for other Kindle Books from Amazon

Here’s quick links to today’s Book Best Sellers and Kindle Best Sellers .
Use the box below to search for other eBooks to read on your Kindle. Type the title, author, or subject in the search box below or click any book and go from there.

ATTENTION – Do Not Use Hamster Free eBook Converter

If you have been searching for eBook converters you may have come across HamsterSoft which has a product called Hamster Free eBook Converter (HFEC). This product illegally uses the Calibre conversion engine as part of their product and should not be downloaded or used!

Don’t have a Kindle?

Here are the models that are currently available from Amazon:

We personally went with the Kindle Keyboard (this was before the Touch came out) since we couldn’t think of a good reason we’d need to download books while out.

What is the Epub format?

EPub is a free and open e-book standard. Here’s an interesting fact you may not know; EPub files are very much like web pages and can actually be edited with a web page editor. Here’s the full details from Wikipedia if you’re interested.

Why EPub?

If you don’t have an existing EPub book collection is there any reason to think about EPubs? There might be.
As a free open source format it will be used by many independent publishers that won’t be on the Amazon site. Google Books has quite a few available EPUB books. Depending on where you source your books you may find cheaper or free books in the EPub format that you want to add to your collection. Also, if you happen to be using different eReaders throughout your home or business then EPub is a publishing standard.

Other Places for Epub Books

Look for EPub books at: Google Books,, and Mobile Read

Don’t exclude EPub’s just because they aren’t a Kindle standard. Read EPub books on your Kindle as you would any other format. Enjoy reading!

I can’t say a whole lot about this post, it just shouts Alley! Well, it doesn’t but I say it does, so it does! So there.

My Everyday Photos

Every winter the Methow Valley Nordic Club sponsors the always popular Doggie Dash in Winthrop near the Town Trailhead. It is one of the most fun events of the year for dog lovers and their friends. In addition to being a race, it’s also a costume contest. Many people put more effort into their costume design than the race itself in hopes of taking home the traveling trophy – a magnificent golden poodle! The race categories included kids, adults with big dogs, adults with little dogs and skijoring teams. Generous sponsors provide lots of doggie treats and prizes.

The Lost Script: “He Walks Among Us” Available Now

By now, many of you may have heard of the Lost Star Trek Episode, written during Star Trek’s original 3 year run. An episode that was never-ever shot. The episode was butchered into a comedy before finally being killed. Then discarded and forgotten – until recently! As this news articles below states:

Lost original Star Trek script to be published as an e-book

By Shane McGlaun, Feb 23rd 2012

I was never a big fan of the original Star Trek series. It seemed like during the summers a kid it was on TV all the time, and I couldn’t get past how cheesy it seemed. I am much more camp Picard than camp Kirk. This is an interesting story about the original Star Trek, and if you’re a fan of the original series, you may remember “The Doomsday Machine” episode. That episode was apparently one of the more popular episodes of the original series and was written by Norman Spinrad.

Spinrad wrote that one episode only, or so most fans thought. It appears that the writer also penned another episode titled “He Walked Among Us” which was intended to be a dramatic episode. The episode was written around Milton Berle as the star. Apparently, a producer named Gene L. Coon didn’t see Berle as a dramatic actor and instead rewrote the episode as a comedy.

Spinrad says that the rewrite was so bad that he begged series creator Gene Roddenberry to kill it. Apparently, Roddenberry read through the episode and agreed, and it was never filmed. At some point, the original script was lost and ended up in the hands of a fan. That fan returned the script to Spinrad 45 years later. If you’re a fan of the original series and that single aired Spinrad episode, you will be positively giddy that Spinrad plans to publish the episode script, as he originally wrote it, as an e-book you can purchase for your Kindle. There is no word on when the book will be available. You can read Spinrad’s version of the events below.

This original version was rewritten into an unfunny comedy by the line producer Gene Coon apparently unaware that Uncle Miltie was also a serious dramatic actor and a good one. It t was so bad that I complained to Roddenberry.

“This is so lousy, Gene, that you should kill it!” I told him. “You can’t, you shouldn’t, shoot this thing! Read it and weep!”

Gene did, and he agreed with me. I killed my second Star Trek, which, down through the years has cost me tens of thousands of dollars in lost residuals.

Another article with not as good writing actually listed where you could get the book. And while this one didn’t include it, I am. It’s available for Kindle’s though, but you can read it on any kindle reader (even if you do not have a kindle itself). Click here to buy it
If you do not have a kindle or want to deal with it, try Barnes & Noble. They have it available for sale as well. Click here to buy it there!

Your Input is NEEDED!!!

Today's post is in the form of a question. Which means this post definitely needs comments. Your answers WILL help me greatly!

As you may be aware, I am on a fixed income. That means I don’t get a lot of extra money for things. And with an upcoming move within a few months and Anime North  in May, I am encouraged to find better ways to supplement my meager income. Which is where you come in.

I’ve been thinking about selling items on Café press or a similar site. I got this idea because I really loved my Ferris Wheel picture and would love it on my wall. Then I got to thinking that maybe you would like a similar opportunity. After all, there were some really good pictures in that lot. Finally, I thought it could be a good way to make a little extra cash.

Of course, I wouldn’t actually sell anything unless it was something of a value to you. Something that you would potentially purchase. Otherwise it is just a waste of my time. Which isn’t that cool.

So my question are:

  • If I created a Café press (or similar service) shop would you purchase items from it? Or would you simply ignore it?
  • And if you did consider purchasing items, what kind of items would you be interested in purchasing? Would you prefer posters/prints? Or would you prefer keychains and coasters? Or would you prefer mouse pads and T-shirts? What is more interesting for you?
  • Finally, as far as content; which you prefer special branded products (like an alley channel coaster) or would you prefer my photos as gifts? I can easily make an logo or use my photos as gifts. The choice would be yours.

Please send me your thoughts and comments below. Thank you.
