So, I saw this parody video on youtube the otherday. It was a tax – Star Trek parody. It wasn’t very good, but it was sweet – like most fan productions. So I dismissed it as some tax people making something to blow off steam. Then I found this news article:
IRS: Mistake to Have Filmed a ‘Star Trek’ Parody
Then I was interested.
What was this video and why was it making the IRS blush? I had to know. So, I found it again and rewatched it:
All I could see what bad jokes that turned into boredom – exactly as it was the first time. Now it could be funny if you edited it a bit differently, but does such a video exist? Well, yes it does . . . I think . . .
Hmm . . . it’s not good, but at least it’s funnier. Of course, it cut out one of the best jokes, so I dunno . . .
WAIT >>>> OH, CRAP >>>>
I forgot that this was made using tax payer’s money. Now, I am all for letting IRS people have a little fun at Star Trek – even if it is bad. So, long as they use only the minimum of tax payer’s funds. They could have used Greenscreen for the sets or had it entirely set on a planet and used real places for sets. But they didn’t and they wasted a crap load of money doing it. This isn’t a normal fan production and I have to remind myself of that.
It’s okay for fans to make bad films based off of the show they love so much. Being creative is a part of fandom. (Don’t believe me? Watch William Shatner’s Get a Life. Also available on netflix.) It when you waste public money on this that I take issue. I get that they require training videos and that Star Trek is a great medium to communicate that with. They just didn’t need to spend 60,000 dollars of our money to do it.
But don’t take my word for it, take theirs:
So, this story has been played out over and over again in so many countries. And it is ironic that in countries such as Canada or the US that this would even be an issue. Immigration is a part of their core, it is how these countries were founded. And to baulk at it is ironic. Yet I understand their fears – French could be lost in Quebec or it could not. If that is what the majority speak – then it will be like English in countries such as the US – French will gobble up the other languages. Then again, it is Canada so all bets are off . . .
So, blame Wolf for this since he showed me the first Extra Credits episode that saw. Now get out there and enjoy this:

So, this looks like a commercial for McD’s. And I believe it is, I just don’t know where it was aired or if it was intended for the internet. Either way it doesn’t matter because it’s a nice story – told in pictures. It displays the power of the commercial as it as evolved. Now get your ass out to McDonalds!
